Boston comes out of a necessity to familiarize myself with new surroundings. As I tried to make sense of a city laid out in polar opposite to Chicago’s grid system, the US/Mexico border fence was being lengthened, heightened and solidified. An effort to protect us from them. As I acquainted myself with the Dominican neighborhood I lived in, the surrounding businesses, the sights and sounds and people, factories an hour away were being raided by U.S. Immigration, acts designed to ensure my safety. All this, while children were left to fend for themselves as their parents were deported. These activating agents disclosed Boston fences to my eyes, separating everything from everything. In this rendering, I was a threat and everyone was a threat to me.
